ClemenGold and Sinclair partner on compostable fruit labelling in South Africa

ClemenGold International and Sinclair are implementing compostable fruit packaging labels for citrus packaging applications in South Africa.

ClemenGold International and fresh produce labelling specialist Sinclair have partnered to introduce compostable fruit labels across ClemenGold’s group-owned packhouses in South Africa, marking a packaging innovation focused on reducing waste from fresh produce labelling systems. The project is being implemented with support from local supplier HG Molenaar.

The partnership centres on Sinclair’s T55 compostable fruit label technology, developed as an alternative to conventional fruit stickers used in citrus and fresh produce packaging. The labels are certified for both home and industrial composting and are designed to decompose together with fruit peel, eliminating the need for label separation before disposal.

According to Sinclair, the T55 label complies with EN 13432, NFT 51-800 and AS 5810 compostability standards and has received certifications from TÜV Austria, DIN CERTCO and the Australasian Bioplastics Association (ABA). The label is also approved for direct food contact applications.

The development highlights increasing innovation within produce packaging and labelling, where industry attention is expanding beyond primary packaging materials to include adhesives, labels and other small-format packaging components that affect recyclability and organic waste processing.

Fresh produce exporters and retailers are increasingly evaluating packaging systems that support compostability targets and reduce contamination in food waste streams, particularly as sustainability requirements continue to evolve across international markets.

For the citrus sector, the adoption of compostable fruit labels represents a shift towards packaging components designed to align with circular economy and organic waste management objectives without affecting product identification or retail presentation.

ClemenGold said the implementation forms part of its broader sustainability programme, while Sinclair noted growing demand for compostable labelling technologies within the global fresh produce packaging sector.
